An estimated 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are generated every day. Within this torrential flow lies tremendous value for scientific discovery, business decisions, and public policy, but managing and processing this data in order to extract these insights is a colossal challenge. New systems and methods for storing, combining, analyzing, and visualizing data are desperately needed to take full advantage of this valuable resource.
Data and database researchers at UChicago CS bring a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to these challenges, extending the theory and foundations of data management and data science. They develop resource-efficient data processing systems, platforms for large-scale video analysis, and systems that utilize and accelerate machine learning for deeper data discovery. They also work with colleagues from across the UChicago landscape to explore the application of data science to fields such as medicine, economics, astronomy, and climatology.
